Uthaimeen on Not Giving Reminders During Taraaweeh

May 28, 2018 § Leave a comment

Ibn Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked: Here in Kuwait we have a reminder after four rak’ahs during the night prayer, is that allowed? And if it is, how is this reminder to be conducted?

Uthaimeen: I hold that it should not be done. Firstly, because it isn’t from the Salaf’s guidance. Secondly, because some people like to come to tahajjud and then leave to go home [as soon as it’s finished]. Having a reminder hinders them, bores them, and forces them to stay to listen to it.

If a reminder is not received well then its harm is more than its benefit, and that is why the Prophet ﷺ used to look after his Companions by preaching to them at suitable times and wouldn’t make it burdensome for them or repetitive. So I hold that leaving it is more correct. And if the Imaam does intend to preach to the people then let him do it at the end, when the prayer has completely finished.

Memorising the Quraan will Be Difficult Unless …

Shaikh Muhammad Atiyyah Saalim said, “And I heard the Shaikh [i.e., Shaikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Mukhtaar ash-Shinqiti, author of the tafseer, ‘Adwaaul-Bayaan’], may Allaah have mercy on us and him, make the following statement, ‘The Quraan will not become firmly established in one’s chest, nor will memorising it become easy, and neither understanding it, except by standing in prayer with it in the depth of the night,’ and he, may Allaah have mercy on him, would not leave his set portion of recitation during the night whether in summer or winter.’”

’Uthaimeen on the Du’aa for Finishing the Recitation of the Quraan During the Night Prayer

Shaikh ’Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “What is the ruling concerning the du’aa for finishing the recitation of the Quraan in the night prayer in Ramadaan?”

He replied, “I don’t know of any Sunnah from the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions either connected to finishing the recitation of the Quraan during the qiyaam al-lail in Ramadaan. The most that has been narrated about that is that Anas ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, would gather his family and supplicate when he would finish reciting the whole Quraan, and that was not in the prayer.”

Fataawaa Arkaan al-Islaam, p. 354.
