Ibn Baaz said, “Repentance nullifies what went before it and wipes it out, alhamdulillah, so don’t have anything [negative] in your heart about that, you must have good thoughts about your Lord, believing that He has turned in repentance to you if you are truthful in your repentance, because He said, “Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O believers, so that you may be successful,” so He attached success to repentance, whoever repents has succeeded, so you must have good thoughts about your Lord, [believing] that He will accept your repentance if you are truthful in it and regret what you did and leave doing it, resolving not to go back to it. And beware of the whispers of the devil [waswās].”

Ibn Rajab, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “It is not right for morning or evening to come upon a believer except that he is in a state of repentance, because he does not know when death might surprise him. [Will it be] in the morning or the evening? Or will his soul be taken when he is performing an act of obedience or disobedience? So whoever comes upon morning or evening not in a state of repentance then he is in danger, since it is feared that he will meet Allaah not repenting and thus be gathered alongside the company of oppressors.”

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Turning back to Allaah is by feeling remorseful at what one has done, and wishing one hadn’t done the sin, and by resolving not to go back to it in the future—it is not a condition that a person doesn’t do that sin again, the condition is that he resolves not to go back to it—then if it does so happen that his soul entices him and he does it again, his initial repentance for that earlier sin is sound, but he must repent afresh from the following sin which he has just committed.”

Shaikh ’Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “My brothers, finish Ramadaan by turning to Allaah the Most High in repentance from having sinned against Him, and by returning to Him in repentance by doing what pleases Him, for no person is void of having mistakes or shortcomings, all of the Children of Aadam make mistakes and the best of those who do so are those who repent. And when He addressed him, Allaah the Mighty and Majestic urged the Prophet ﷺ to seek His forgiveness and to turn to Him in repentance, saying, ‘And turn to Allaah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.’”

Shaikh ’Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Be aware of the fact that when you ask Allaah you are a winner in every situation, because He سبحانه will either give you what you ask for or divert an evil which is greater [than what you asked for] away from you or He will store it away for you as reward on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever supplicates to Allaah then he will not be let down—so supplicate to Him a great deal, and seek forgiveness and turn in repentance to Him a great deal.”

Ibn al-Qayyim said, “Indeed when Allaah intends good for a servant, He strips away sight of his good deeds from his heart, and their mention from his tongue, and causes him to become preoccupied with his sins, and they continue to be before his eyes until he enters Paradise. For indeed, those actions which have been accepted–the sight of them is removed from the heart and their remembrance from the tongue.
And one of the Salaf said, ‘Indeed the servant commits a mistake by which he enters Paradise. And he performs a good deed by which he enters the Fire.’
They said, ‘How so?’
He said, ‘He commits a mistake and so it remains before his eyes. When he recalls it he regrets it, resigns [himself to] and earnestly implores Allaah, and hastens to erase it, and he becomes broken and humble before his Lord, and his self-amazement and arrogance disappears. And he will perform a good deed and it will remain before his eyes, he sees it and uses it as a favour, and becomes self-conceited because of it, becomes arrogant because of it, until he enters the Fire.’”
