“This instance is narrated by The Shaikh, Dr. [Abu Anas] Hamad al-’Uthmaan from Kuwait, and he is one of the students of Shaikh ’Uthaimeen who accompanied him for more than five years. It shows the steadfastness of Shaikh ’Uthaimeen in worship and that he wouldn’t leave the night prayer even when travelling. What happened was that Shaikh Abu Anas Hamad al-’Uthmaan accompanied the Shaikh on a journey from ’Unaizah to Riyadh, and then they headed out to Makkah by car for ’Umrah. After they finished ’Umrah, everyone who was accompanying the Shaikh yielded to sleep due to how exhausted they were from their journey and the ’Umrah.
‘And I woke up,’ said Shaikh Hamad al-’Uthmaan, ‘half way through the night and lo and behold the Shaikh was standing in prayer. So I said to myself, ‘Yaa Subhaanallaah, I’m a youth who succumbed to sleep, and this is an elderly Shaikh who succumbed to prayer and worship.’ So I performed ablution and started to pray, following the example of the Shaikh. So I tried to fight off the drowsiness and overcome it but I wasn’t able to and sleep overcame me.
So I went to sleep and the Shaikh was there still praying.’”

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “My mother and father passed away when I was little and, bearing in mind that they were poor, I don’t know whether they performed Hajj or not, so what should I do?” He replied, “There is no Hajj on your parents in such a state and there is no deficiency in their religion which they are to be blamed for, and that is because Hajj is only obligatory on the person who is able to carry it out, due to Allaah’s Statement, the Most High, ‘And [due] to Allaah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House, for whoever is able to find a way thereto.’ [Aali-’Imraan 3:97]
But if you do want to perform Hajj or ’Umrah on their behalf, then start firstly with your mother and secondly, your father.”

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “I want to point out a mistake that many people in the present time fall into when they seek out the twenty-seventh night [of Ramadaan] to perform umrah, for you will find that on it the Masjid al-Haraam is crammed with people. Singling out the twenty-seventh night for Umrah is an innovation since Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم did not, in his actions or statements, earmark it for [performing] umrah.”
