Al-Maawardi said, “Why did Allaah order Bani Israa’eel to slaughter a cow instead of another animal?
He ordered them to slaughter a cow instead of another animal because it was from the same category [of animal] as the calf they worshipped—so that they would hold to be contemptible what they had formally held in veneration, and so that from their compliance it be known that what they harboured in themselves concerning worshipping it had ceased.”
