August 3, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “It is obligatory for the fasting person to beware of everything that Allaah has forbidden for him and to safeguard everything that Allaah has made obligatory upon him, and by doing so it is hoped that he will be forgiven and freed from the Fire and that his fasting and standing to pray will be accepted.”

August 3, 2012 § Leave a comment

Ibn Baaz on Ramadaan and Seizing the Opportunity
August 2, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “The believer should seize this opportunity, [this opportunity] being the favour that Allaah has given him in allowing him to come by the month of Ramadaan, so he should hasten to acts of obedience and beware of evil ones, and strive to execute what Allaah has made obligatory upon him—especially the five prayers, for they are the pillar of Islaam and the greatest obligation after the two shahaadahs.”
Vol. 15, p. 13.
Ibn Baaz on the Purpose of Fasting
August 2, 2012 § 3 Comments
Shaikh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “The purpose of fasting is to be obedient to Allaah, subhaanah, and to honour what He has forbidden, and to fight against the souls desires in obedience to its Patron [Mawlaa], and to make it accustomed to being patient regarding those things that Allaah has forbidden. The purpose [of fasting] is not just to leave food and drink … the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, and ignorance then Allaah has no need for him to leave his food and drink.’”
Vol. 15, p. 15.
Ibn Baaz on the Impetus for Fasting and Praying in Ramadaan
August 2, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “What is obligatory upon a Muslim is to fast out of faith and in the hope of receiving Allaah’s reward, not for showing off or to be heard or just to blindly follow the people or to follow his family or the people of his city, rather what is obligatory upon him is that the impetus for fasting be his faith that Allaah has made it obligatory upon him and [also] his hope for the reward that is with his Lord for doing so, and this applies to standing for prayer in Ramadaan [too], the Muslim should do it out of faith and hoping for Allaah’s reward from it, not for another reason.”
Vol. 16, p.15.
Ibn Baaz on Fasting During a Journey
August 1, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “The traveller has the choice of either fasting or not fasting, and what is apparent from the legislated proofs is that not fasting is better especially if the fast is difficult for him, due to the saying of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, “Fasting during a journey is not righteousness.”
Vol. 15, p. 236.
Uthaimeen Asked About How To Know if You’re Too Ill to Fast
August 1, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “What is the scale/degree of harm according to which a fast becomes harmful for someone who is ill and after which it becomes forbidden?” He replied, “Indeed, harm is known through feeling and it maybe known by being informed of it. As for knowing it by feel then it is if an ill person feels that the fast is harming him and making his pain worse and delaying his recovery. And as for [recognising that] by being informed then it is if a knowledgeable, trustworthy, doctor tells him that [it is harmful], and it is not a condition that the doctor be a Muslim.”

Uthaimeen on the Imaam’s Intonation During Recitation
July 31, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “Some mosque Imaams try to soften the people’s hearts and affect them by sometimes changing the tone/inflection of their voice during the Tarawih prayer and the Qunut supplication, what do you say about that?” So he replied, “If this action is done within the confines of the Legislation without being excessive then there is no harm in it but being excessive like not passing by a word in the Quraan except by making such intonations, then that is not fitting.”

Uthaimeen’s Advice to the Imaams Not to Burden the People by Prolonging the Witr Supplication
July 30, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “I advise our brothers, the Imaams [who lead the prayers] not to prolong the Qunoot supplication [in witr] to the extent that it is difficult for the people to bear, and they use unusual, rhyming supplications–[whereas] the best speech is short and concise, and it is better that a person does something in the legislated fashion so that the people do not become fed up.”
Fiqhul-Ibaadaat, p. 291.
Why did Allaah specify fasting by saying, ‘Fasting is for Me and I will reward [the fasting person] for it?’
July 29, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him was asked, “Why did Allaah, the Most High, specify fasting in His Saying, ‘Fasting is for Me and I will reward [the fasting person] for it?’” So he replied, “Because the fasting person leaves his food, drink and desires for the Sake of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, in all those places where only his Lord can see him, so Allaah, the Most High, specified it for Himself because of the manifestation of total sincerity in it.”

Uthaimeen on Not Wasting Ramadaan Looking for Different Types of Food and Being Excessive
July 27, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “If the people have no concern except to have a variety of food, to sleep during the day, and to talk during the night about things which will not benefit them–then there is no doubt that this is a squandering of a priceless opportunity which may not come again to that person in his lifetime. So the resolute man is the one who progresses in Ramadaan according to [an amount of] sleep that is fitting at the first part of the night, and by standing to pray in Tarawih, and standing to pray at the end of the night if he can, and likewise he is not excessive in his food or drink.”

Uthaimeen’s Encouragement to Feed the Fasting
July 24, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Whoever has the ability should be keen on providing people who are fasting with iftaar, either in the mosques or in any other place, because, “Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person.” So when a person feeds his fasting brothers he will have a reward like theirs, thus whoever Allaah the Most High has enriched [from His Bounty] should seize the opportunity to attain this great reward.”

Uthaimeen on Giving the Differing Seasons of Worship Their Due Worth
July 20, 2012 § 1 Comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “O People! Fear Allaah, the Most High, and be grateful to Him for the seasons of goodness that He has bestowed upon you, and the excellence and dignity that He has given you. Value these seasons/times and give them their true worth by performing acts of obedience and actions which will bring you closer [to Him] and by refraining from committing sins and destructive actions [mubiqaat]–for these seasons were only made to expiate your sins and to increase your good deeds and to raise your ranks.”

Uthaimeen on Claiming that the Prophet’s Ascension Occurred on the 27th of Rajab
June 16, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “It has become well-known among many people that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ascended [to the Heavens] on the 27th night of the month of Rajab—but this has no basis, so whoever introduces something into Allaah’s Religion which is not a part of it will have nothing but trouble and difficulty, and his action is rejected, his way misguided: the Prophet عليه الصلاة والسلام said, ‘All innovation is misguidance, and all misguidance is in the Fire.’”

Uthaimeen on This Life
June 12, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “It is fitting that we do not incline towards this life and find reassurance in it, instead we should direct our energy to the abode of the Hereafter, and this is not incompatible with us taking pleasure in or enjoying what Allaah has made halaal for us, whilst being upright in our religion.”
Tafseer Surah al-Baqarah, vol. 3, p. 24.
Uthaimeen on Visiting the Sick
June 11, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “Along with the fact that visiting a sick person is a fulfilment of the rights a Muslim has over his brother, it also brings about affection and closeness which none except someone who becomes sick and who is then visited by his brothers can perceive, for he finds [a feeling of] great love for those people who visited him and you will find that he tastes it and speaks about it amply. So along with the reward it entails, it establishes closeness amongst the Muslims.”

Uthaimeen’s Advice
June 2, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “I advise myself and you to always ask Allaah for steadfastness upon faith and that you have fear–for below your feet are pitfalls, if Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not keep you firm, you will fall into destruction.”
Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 5, p. 388.
The Expiation for Backbiting
June 1, 2012 § 1 Comment

Uthaimeen on How One Should Feel When Performing a Righteous Act
May 31, 2012 § 1 Comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Would that every time we performed a legislated act we felt that we were imitating Allaah’s Messenger, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, and his noble Companions, for indeed there is no doubt that [by doing so] a person will find a powerful impetus in his heart which will make him associate with the behaviour of the Salaf as-Saalih, thus becoming a Salafi in creed, actions, manners and methodology.”
Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 4, p. 22.
Visiting The Prophet’s Mosque in Rajab
May 29, 2012 § 1 Comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “Some people believe that visiting the Prophet’s Mosque in [the month of] Rajab has some special merit and they go to it from all over, calling it, ‘The Rajab Visit.’ This is an innovation which has no basis and none of the forerunners spoke about it even those who came after the three generations, because what is apparent is that it was introduced much later, so it is an innovation.
But there is no harm in visiting Madinah in the month of Rajab–but not due to the fact that it is Rajab.
But a person who believes that such a visit performed in Rajab has some special merit has missed the mark and gone astray and he is from the people of innovation.”
Fataawaa Fil-Hajj, p. 660.
On Someone Who Disagrees With You
May 26, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “I hold that when a person disagrees with you not out of stubbornness but due to some evidence he has, your love for him should increase. Because the one who contradicts you based upon proof didn’t flatter or take sides with you, but [instead] was frank just like you are. The stubborn person, he didn’t want the truth.”

Contentment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “From Allaah’s Blessings on a servant is that he be granted contentment, whether that be regarding his residence, his clothes, his means of transport, or his children.
For when a person is content with what Allaah has given him, he will remain rich.”

Uthaimeen Likening People who Attach Loyalty and Disownment to People to Children Playing on the Street
May 17, 2012 § 4 Comments
Questioner: Your eminence, Shaikh, in this residence there are some youth, may Allaah guide them, who will pass by a person and not give him salaam because he follows a Shaikh he hates or follows a Jamaa’ah which differs from his manhaj, so what do you advise them, may Allaah reward you with good?
Uthaimeen: This question has been addressed before and the answer is that this is not from the way of the believers and nor from the way of the Salaf as-Saalih and that it is not permissible for a person to boycott his brother for more than three days, such that they meet and this one turns away and that one turns away. The better of the two is the one who initiates the salaam.
Thus it is obligatory on you, firstly, not to attach loyalty and disownment/love and hate [al-Walaa wal-Baraa] to people, because loyalty and disownment is connected to meanings.
As for someone who attaches it to people then he resembles the state of children playing in the street [when they say], “You’re either with me or him …” and this is wrong.
So it is obligatory on you to pay heed to your lessons and to not become busy with, “It was said … he said ..” and we ask Allaah سبحانه وتعالى to give our brothers who have made the mistakes they have, guidance and success in following the Truth, because a person is only human and needs help.

Ibn Baaz … “Before His Death He Woke Up From Sleep …”
May 14, 2012 § 1 Comment
Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Abdul-Aziz ibn Baaz said, “Before his death he woke up from sleep and performed ablution and spread out his prayer mat and started to say, ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah’ and ‘Allaahu Akbar,’ and then he tried to go back to sleep again but he felt some difficulty in breathing so we called an ambulance and while we were taking him to the hospital, he died on the way, and we praise Allaah for his Pre-Decree and its execution [al-Qadar wal-Qadaa].”

Uthaimeen on Boycotting
April 29, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Every believer, even if he is a disobedient sinner [faasiq]–then it is forbidden to boycott him if there is no benefit in that boycotting.
If there is benefit in the boycotting then we do it because at that point the boycotting would be a cure.
But when there is no benefit in it or when it results in an increase in disobedience and insolence–then leaving that which has no benefit is the benefit.”

Ibn al-Jawzi on the Dying Person’s Alertness
March 31, 2012 § 2 Comments
The Shaikh, the Imaam, the Allaamah, the Shaikh of Islaam, Abul-Faraj Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jawzi, said:
“From the most interesting things is the alertness of the dying person at the time of his death—for he becomes perceptive to a degree which cannot be described, and worried to an extent that has no limits.
And he yearns for his times of old, and wishes that he be left so that he can make up for what passed him by, and so that he can be truthful in his repentance in accordance with the level of certainty he [now] has about death.
And he—out of grief—almost kills his own soul before its [actual] death.
And if a [single] atoms weight of these things were found at the time of health and well-being, everything that is intended by doing pious deeds would be achieved.
So the intellectual one is he who pictures that hour and acts according to what it requires. And if he is not able to do that, then he visualises it as much as he is able to, for it will prevent desire’s hand, and will arouse seriousness/earnestness [in him].
As for the person who has that hour right before his very eyes [i.e., is always thinking about it in order to prepare], then he is like its prisoner.
As is reported about Habib al-Ajami. When he would wake in the morning he would say to his wife, ‘If I die today, then let so and so be the one who washes me, and so and so be the ones who carry me.’
And al-Ma’roof said to a person, ‘Pray the midday prayer [dhur] with us!’ So he replied, ‘If I pray the midday prayer [dhur] with you I’m not going to pray the afternoon prayer [asr] with you.’ So al-Ma’roof said, ‘And it is as though you have hope that you will live till asr? I seek refuge with Allaah from having lengthy/drawn out hopes.’ And a person backbit another, so al-Ma’roof said, ‘Remember the cotton when they place it on your eyes [at the time of death].’”

Ibn al-Jawzi’s Remarkable Comments on Supplication
March 27, 2012 § Leave a comment
The Shaikh, the Imaam, the Allaamah, the Shaikh of Islaam, Abul-Faraj Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jawzi, said:
“I have reflected over an interesting situation: that a calamity may befall a believer and so he supplicates, going to great lengths in doing so, but he sees no sign of an answer. So when despair comes close, at that time his heart is looked at, thus if it is acceptant of the [many] decrees of fate, not having despaired of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic’s Bounty, then in most cases at that time the response is hastened, for it is there that eemaan is qualified, and the devil vanquished, and it is there that a man’s worth is shown.
And this has been alluded to in His Saying, the Most High, “… until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, “When is the help of Allaah?” [Baqarah 2:214]. And likewise is what happened to Ya’qoob عليه السلام, for when he lost a son and the situation went on for a long time, he did not despair—and then his other son was taken, but his hope in his Lord’s Bounty that, “… perhaps Allaah will bring them to me all together …” [Yusuf 12:83] still did not cut off. And likewise Zakariya عليه السلام said, “… and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy [i.e., disappointed].” [Maryam 19:3]
So beware of considering as too long the time for a prayer to be answered!
And look to the fact that He is the Sovereign Lord/the Absolute King of the entire universe, and that He is the All-Wise in that which He plans, and the One who knows what is of benefit [to you], and that He wants to examine you in order to test your concealed mettle, and that He wants to see your earnest supplication, and that He wants to reward you for your patience, and other such purposes.
In addition to that, He is testing you by delaying the response to your supplication so that you can fight Iblis’ whisperings and wicked insinuations—and every one of these things strengthens [one’s] belief in His Bounty, and obligates being thankful to Him—for He, by testing you with the trial, prepared you to turn to ask Him.
And the distressed person’s destitution/poverty in having to turn to Him is total and utter affluence.”
Saidul-Khaatir, pp. 227-228.
Ibn Baaz Angry
March 24, 2012 § Leave a comment
Shaikh Raashid ibn Uthmaan az-Zahraani said, “A student asked the Shaikh about giving precedence to the saying of a Companion or a student of a Companion over that of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. So the Shaikh became angry at that statement and struck his head with his hand saying, ‘O so and so! You have to place the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم on your head [i.e., give precedence to it]!’ Then after a while the Shaikh called that person and said, ‘You must free me from that [i.e., the fact that I became angry, i.e., don’t hold it against me], for I did not say that except out of eagerness to establish the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.'”
