Why is it Called Lailatul-Qadr?

August 10, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Lailatul-Qadr is given that name for two reasons.  The first is because the actions of the children of Aadam and other things that will happen in that year are decreed, due to His Saying, the Most High, “Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night.  Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].  Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct every precise matter …” [Dukhaan 44:3-4] i.e., explained in detail and made clear.  The second reason is that it is a night of honour because of its immense value/rank, and His Saying, the Most High, shows that, “Indeed, We sent it [i.e., the Quraan] down during the Night of Decree.  And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?  The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” [al-Qadr 97:1-3]

Uthaimeen Asked About Seeking Knowledge During I’tikaaf

August 9, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “Does someone who is performing i’tikaaf negate its spirit by seeking knowledge?”  He replied, “There is no doubt that seeking knowledge is obedience to Allaah the Most High, but i’tikaaf is for specific forms of worship like prayer, dhikr, reciting the Quraan and things like that.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 6, p. 501.

Uthaimeen Asked When I’tikaaf Starts?

August 8, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked when i’tikaaf starts so he replied, “The majority of the people of knowledge are of the opinion that it starts from the night of the twenty-first and not from fajr of the twenty-first, even though some scholars held the view that it starts from fajr of the twenty-first using the hadith of Aishah as proof, ‘So when he prayed the morning prayer he entered his place of i’tikaaf,’ but the majority [of the people of knowledge] answered that by saying that the Prophet عليه الصلاة السلام withdrew himself from the people in the morning but that the intention for i’tikaaf was from the start of the night.”

Fataawaz-Zakaati was-Siyaam, p. 855.

Uthaimeen on a Person Who Eats While Being Doubtful as to Whether Fajr Has Emerged

August 5, 2012 § 1 Comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “The fast of a person who eats something while being doubtful as to whether fajr has emerged is correct, and this can be of five types:

1) That he is sure that fajr has not emerged in which case his fast is correct.
2) That he is sure that fajr has emerged in which case his fast is spoiled.
3) That he eats while being doubtful as to whether fajr has begun or not and he thinks that it is more likely that it has not, such a person’s fast is correct.
4) That he eats and drinks while thinking that fajr is emerging, here his fast is also correct.
5) That he eats and drinks whilst having an uncertainty which does not give him a view as to which is more likely, in this case his fast is correct.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 6, pp. 394-395.

Women Whose Periods Finish at the End of the Night Should Fast Even if They Take a Ghusl After the Emergence of Fajr

August 3, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Some women’s periods finish at the end of the night and they know that they have become clean but they don’t fast that day under the assumption that if they do not take a ghusl their fast will not be correct–but that is not the case, their fast is correct even if they didn’t take a ghusl except after the emergence of fajr.”

Fiqhul-Ibaadaat, p. 254.

Uthaimeen Asked About How To Know if You’re Too Ill to Fast

August 1, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “What is the scale/degree of harm according to which a fast becomes harmful for someone who is ill and after which it becomes forbidden?”  He replied, “Indeed, harm is known through feeling and it maybe known by being informed of it.  As for knowing it by feel then it is if an ill person feels that the fast is harming him and making his pain worse and delaying his recovery.  And as for [recognising that] by being informed then it is if a knowledgeable, trustworthy, doctor tells him that [it is harmful], and it is not a condition that the doctor be a Muslim.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 6, pp. 328-329.

Uthaimeen on the Imaam’s Intonation During Recitation

July 31, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “Some mosque Imaams try to soften the people’s hearts and affect them by sometimes changing the tone/inflection of their voice during the Tarawih prayer and the Qunut supplication, what do you say about that?” So he replied, “If this action is done within the confines of the Legislation without being excessive then there is no harm in it but being excessive like not passing by a word in the Quraan except by making such intonations, then that is not fitting.”

Uthaimeen’s Advice to the Imaams Not to Burden the People by Prolonging the Witr Supplication

July 30, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “I advise our brothers, the Imaams [who lead the prayers] not to prolong the Qunoot supplication [in witr] to the extent that it is difficult for the people to bear, and they use unusual, rhyming supplications–[whereas] the best speech is short and concise, and it is better that a person does something in the legislated fashion so that the people do not become fed up.”

Fiqhul-Ibaadaat, p. 291.

Why did Allaah specify fasting by saying, ‘Fasting is for Me and I will reward [the fasting person] for it?’

July 29, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him was asked, “Why did Allaah, the Most High, specify fasting in His Saying, ‘Fasting is for Me and I will reward [the fasting person] for it?’”  So he replied, “Because the fasting person leaves his food, drink and desires for the Sake of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, in all those places where only his Lord can see him, so Allaah, the Most High, specified it for Himself because of the manifestation of total sincerity in it.”

Uthaimeen on Not Wasting Ramadaan Looking for Different Types of Food and Being Excessive

July 27, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “If the people have no concern except to have a variety of food, to sleep during the day, and to talk during the night about things which will not benefit them–then there is no doubt that this is a squandering of a priceless opportunity which may not come again to that person in his lifetime. So the resolute man is the one who progresses in Ramadaan according to [an amount of] sleep that is fitting at the first part of the night, and by standing to pray in Tarawih, and standing to pray at the end of the night if he can, and likewise he is not excessive in his food or drink.”

48 Su’aal fis-Siyaam, pp. 19-20.

Uthaimeen’s Encouragement to Feed the Fasting

July 24, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Whoever has the ability should be keen on providing people who are fasting with iftaar, either in the mosques or in any other place, because, “Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person.” So when a person feeds his fasting brothers he will have a reward like theirs, thus whoever Allaah the Most High has enriched [from His Bounty] should seize the opportunity to attain this great reward.”

48 Su’aal Fis-Siyaam, p. 20.

Uthaimeen on Giving the Differing Seasons of Worship Their Due Worth

July 20, 2012 § 1 Comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “O People! Fear Allaah, the Most High, and be grateful to Him for the seasons of goodness that He has bestowed upon you, and the excellence and dignity that He has given you. Value these seasons/times and give them their true worth by performing acts of obedience and actions which will bring you closer [to Him] and by refraining from committing sins and destructive actions [mubiqaat]–for these seasons were only made to expiate your sins and to increase your good deeds and to raise your ranks.”

Uthaimeen on Claiming that the Prophet’s Ascension Occurred on the 27th of Rajab

June 16, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “It has become well-known among many people that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ascended [to the Heavens] on the 27th night of the month of Rajab—but this has no basis, so whoever introduces something into Allaah’s Religion which is not a part of it will have nothing but trouble and difficulty, and his action is rejected, his way misguided: the Prophet عليه الصلاة والسلام said, ‘All innovation is misguidance, and all misguidance is in the Fire.’”

Uthaimeen on This Life

June 12, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “It is fitting that we do not incline towards this life and find reassurance in it, instead we should direct our energy to the abode of the Hereafter, and this is not incompatible with us taking pleasure in or enjoying what Allaah has made halaal for us, whilst being upright in our religion.”

Tafseer Surah al-Baqarah, vol. 3, p. 24.

Uthaimeen on Visiting the Sick

June 11, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “Along with the fact that visiting a sick person is a fulfilment of the rights a Muslim has over his brother, it also brings about affection and closeness which none except someone who becomes sick and who is then visited by his brothers can perceive, for he finds [a feeling of] great love for those people who visited him and you will find that he tastes it and speaks about it amply. So along with the reward it entails, it establishes closeness amongst the Muslims.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 5, p. 239.

Uthaimeen’s Advice

June 2, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “I advise myself and you to always ask Allaah for steadfastness upon faith and that you have fear–for below your feet are pitfalls, if Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not keep you firm, you will fall into destruction.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 5, p. 388.

Uthaimeen on How One Should Feel When Performing a Righteous Act

May 31, 2012 § 1 Comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Would that every time we performed a legislated act we felt that we were imitating Allaah’s Messenger, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, and his noble Companions, for indeed there is no doubt that [by doing so] a person will find a powerful impetus in his heart which will make him associate with the behaviour of the Salaf as-Saalih, thus becoming a Salafi in creed, actions, manners and methodology.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 4, p. 22.

Visiting The Prophet’s Mosque in Rajab

May 29, 2012 § 1 Comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “Some people believe that visiting the Prophet’s Mosque in [the month of] Rajab has some special merit and they go to it from all over, calling it, ‘The Rajab Visit.’  This is an innovation which has no basis and none of the forerunners spoke about it even those who came after the three generations, because what is apparent is that it was introduced much later, so it is an innovation.

But there is no harm in visiting Madinah in the month of Rajab–but not due to the fact that it is Rajab.

But a person who believes that such a visit performed in Rajab has some special merit has missed the mark and gone astray and he is from the people of innovation.”

Fataawaa Fil-Hajj, p. 660.

On Someone Who Disagrees With You

May 26, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “I hold that when a person disagrees with you not out of stubbornness but due to some evidence he has, your love for him should increase.  Because the one who contradicts you based upon proof didn’t flatter or take sides with you, but [instead] was frank just like you are. The stubborn person, he didn’t want the truth.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 4, p. 159.

Contentment

May 20, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “From Allaah’s Blessings on a servant is that he be granted contentment, whether that be regarding his residence, his clothes, his means of transport, or his children.

For when a person is content with what Allaah has given him, he will remain rich.”

Bulughul-Maraam, vol. 6, p. 272.

Uthaimeen Likening People who Attach Loyalty and Disownment to People to Children Playing on the Street

May 17, 2012 § 4 Comments

Questioner: Your eminence, Shaikh, in this residence there are some youth, may Allaah guide them, who will pass by a person and not give him salaam because he follows a Shaikh he hates or follows a Jamaa’ah which differs from his manhaj, so what do you advise them, may Allaah reward you with good?

Uthaimeen: This question has been addressed before and the answer is that this is not from the way of the believers and nor from the way of the Salaf as-Saalih and that it is not permissible for a person to boycott his brother for more than three days, such that they meet and this one turns away and that one turns away. The better of the two is the one who initiates the salaam.

Thus it is obligatory on you, firstly, not to attach loyalty and disownment/love and hate [al-Walaa wal-Baraa] to people, because loyalty and disownment is connected to meanings.

As for someone who attaches it to people then he resembles the state of children playing in the street [when they say], “You’re either with me or him …” and this is wrong.

So it is obligatory on you to pay heed to your lessons and to not become busy with, “It was said … he said ..” and we ask Allaah سبحانه وتعالى to give our brothers who have made the mistakes they have, guidance and success in following the Truth, because a person is only human and needs help.

Uthaimeen on Boycotting

April 29, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Every believer, even if he is a disobedient sinner [faasiq]–then it is forbidden to boycott him if there is no benefit in that boycotting.

If there is benefit in the boycotting then we do it because at that point the boycotting would be a cure.

But when there is no benefit in it or when it results in an increase in disobedience and insolence–then leaving that which has no benefit is the benefit.”

Fataawaa fil-Aqidah, vol. 2, p. 1098.

Uthaimeen: A Person Will Be According to What He Becomes Accustomed To

March 24, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “It is fitting that a person be serious and resolute when he performs an action, carrying it out with strength and without slackness or laziness, in opposition to the actions of some people, where you will find that they face the actions [that they have to carry out] with weakness, negligence and laziness.  And a person will be according to that which he becomes accustomed to, if he becomes accustomed to being firm-willed and having strength and not abandoning an action in the future then he will become resolute in his actions and will reach what he hopes for.”

Tafseer Surah as-Saafaat, p. 212.

Giving Precedence to Others Over Yourself in Those Things Which Are Obligatory

March 20, 2012 § 1 Comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Giving precedence to others over yourself in those things which are obligatory is not allowed. For example, if a person only has enough water for himself with which to perform ablution and there is another person with him who needs water, he is not to give the water to the other person, the other person should do tayammum.  Because this is giving precedence to others over yourself in those things which are obligatory, and giving such precedence to others over yourself is haraam.’

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti’, vol. 15, p. 40.

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Guard strictly [the practice] of always inspecting/investigating your heart.  For it may have the sickness of doubts or the sickness of desires, and everything–and all praise is for Allaah–has a cure.  So the Noble Quraan is a cure for doubts and desires.”

Ash-Sharh al-Mumti, vol. 4, p. 22.

Uthaimeen Asked: Do I Have to Tell My First Wife I’m Getting Married Again?

February 20, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked, “I want to get married to a second wife, is it permissible for me to marry again secretly without telling my first?”

So he said, “It is permissible for you to marry again and not tell your wife about it but the nikaah must be in the open and something announced [i.e., not secret], because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered that saying, “Announce the nikaah.”  And when you do what Allaah and His Messenger have ordered by announcing the nikaah, then Allaah the Most High will make your wife pleased with you when she finds out.”

Uthaimeen: How to Handle a Blessing or a Calamity That May Come Your Way

February 19, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “If you are given a blessing then do not [just] take it as a blessing, becoming merry and happy.  It is a blessing, there is no doubt about that, but know that you are being tested by it, [tested] to see whether you will give due thanks for it or not.

If some harm comes your way, then be patient, for that too is a trial and test from Allaah the Mighty and Majestic to test whether you will be patient or not.  And if you are patient and hope for the reward from Allaah, then Allaah said, “Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning.”  [Zumar 39:10]

Understand It

February 15, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “The Quraan was revealed for three things.  The first: to worship Allaah by reciting it.  Secondly, to ponder over its meanings.  And thirdly, to take heed through it.  Allaah, the Blessed and Most High, said, “[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” [Saad 38:29]

And it is not possible for anyone to ponder over the Quraan except by knowing its meaning, because the one who does not know the meaning is like the one who does not read.”

Uthaimeen: Orphans, the Poor and Your Heart

February 8, 2012 § Leave a comment

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “Know that being kind to the weak, the orphans and the young places mercy in the heart, and softness, and tenderness and [a feeling of] turning to Allaah the Mighty and Majestic which none except those who have tried this can grasp.  So that which is fitting for you is that you have mercy on the young, that you have mercy on the orphans and that you have mercy on the poor so that there will be compassion and affection and mercy in your heart.”

So Uthaimeen started laughing …

February 1, 2012 § Leave a comment

Abdul-Kareem ibn Saalih al-Muqrin said, “After each recording of the programme, ‘Questions Over the Phone,’ while we were in the studio, brother Sa’d Khamees would say to Shaikh Uthaimeen, ‘May Allaah reward you with good, O Shaikh.  And may He have mercy on your parents.’  So the Shaikh said, ‘Aameen, O Sa’d.  And me?’  So Sa’d said, ‘May Allaah have mercy on your parents.’  So the Shaikh said, ‘Aameen, O Sa’d.  And me?’  So Sa’d realised what he meant and said, ‘May Allaah have mercy on you, and on your parents, and may He reward you with the best of rewards on our behalf.’

So the Shaikh smiled and laughed and we all laughed too.”
